…Butch Wicked certainly meets the mark, even if just for the subversive decision to repurpose these beloved songs with an all-butch cast. There’s a reason why queer people have ardently adored Wicked since its 2003 Broadway opening — and yes, part of it is simply that gays love theater. But the story of Elphaba — an outcast marred forever as a villain for refusing to bend to the will of the majority — is a story that’s all too familiar to queer and trans people, especially in these times. The production is also true to the spirit of Wicked because it doubled as a fundraiser for GLITS, a Black trans-led organization providing vital support to trans and sex worker New Yorkers.
